How to Tackle Synonyms in PSC Exams
Mar 25, 2026
Synonyms are one of the most commonly tested areas in Kerala PSC exams. While they may seem straightforward, choosing the correct synonym from a list of similar-sounding options can be surprisingly tricky. The key lies in understanding context and subtle differences in meaning.
1. Understand the Context
Never look at a word in isolation. The sentence in which the word appears gives you vital clues about its intended meaning. A word like "bright" can mean intelligent, vivid, or cheerful depending on the context. Always read the full sentence before selecting an answer.
2. Learn Root Words
Many English words share Latin or Greek roots. Understanding these roots helps you decode unfamiliar words. For example, "bene" means good — so benefactor, benevolent, and beneficial all carry a positive connotation.
3. Practice with Previous Year Papers
Kerala PSC often repeats patterns. By solving previous year question papers, you'll notice which synonyms appear frequently. Focus on these high-frequency words first for maximum impact on your score.
4. Use Elimination
When unsure, eliminate the obviously wrong answers first. Even removing one or two options dramatically increases your chance of selecting the right synonym. Look for words that are antonyms or completely unrelated to narrow down your choices.
5. Build a Daily Habit
Learn 5-10 new words daily with their synonyms. Use flashcards or apps to reinforce memory. Consistency matters more than volume — a steady habit of learning a few words daily will outperform cramming hundreds of words before the exam.
